The Science

What is structured water?

Structured water — also called EZ water or exclusion zone water — refers to a molecular arrangement that researchers describe as a fourth phase of water, distinct from solid, liquid, and vapor. The concept was developed by Dr. Gerald Pollack, professor of bioengineering at the University of Washington, whose published research suggests structured water forms organized molecular clusters with a slight negative charge near hydrophilic surfaces.

This same molecular organization occurs naturally in springs, glacial melt, and the water inside fresh produce. Mainstream science is still investigating the full physiological role of structured water — but the underlying physics is well-established: when water moves through a controlled vortex pattern, the hydrogen-bond network reorganizes.

How UMH devices work. Every UMH structuring device — Pure, Master, Alpha, and Delta — uses the same core principle. Water passes through a gold-plated brass chamber containing handcrafted borosilicate glass vials filled with high-energy spring water. The chamber geometry creates a controlled vortex (the same dynamic found in natural rivers and waterfalls), and the vials transfer structural information to the passing water without direct contact. No filtration. No mineral alteration. No chemistry. The device's only job is to organize what's already there.

Where structuring sits in the water-optimization stack. Structuring is the final step, not a substitute for filtration or remineralization. Water should be filtered first (reverse osmosis for drinking water; whole-home filtration for the house), remineralized if it's been demineralized (Sango Coral or similar), and structured last. The Hydration Stack — GoodFor's most-purchased drinking water configuration — runs water through MicroMax 8500 RO, then Sango Coral remineralization, then the UMH Pure as the final structuring stage.

A note on evidence. Research on structured water is emerging, not settled. Dr. Pollack's work has been published in peer-reviewed journals, and many wellness practitioners, longevity clinics, and performance-focused families integrate UMH devices into their water routines. We position these devices honestly: the physics of vortex action on water molecules is demonstrable; the broader physiological claims sit in a contested research space; what customers consistently report is a noticeable difference in taste and a feeling of better hydration. Three Reasons People Add a Structurer

Why your RO stack might need this.

01

Water tastes different.

Customers consistently describe structured water as softer, rounder, and easier to drink — even when the source water is identical. Taste is the universally reported difference, and it's the reason most people who try a UMH device keep one.

02

Designed for cell-level absorption.

Structured water forms cluster patterns that research suggests may move more efficiently through aquaporin channels — the protein gateways your cells use to absorb water. Pollack's work positions this as the mechanism behind the "better hydration" effect that practitioners observe.

03

No filters. No power. No upkeep.

The inline UMH devices (Pure and Master) require zero maintenance — no consumables, no electricity, no drain. The tabletop devices (Alpha and Delta) need a simple baking-soda clean 1–2 times a year. 5-year warranty; lifetime-durable build.

Built in Austria · TÜV EU Certified

Precision-engineered structuring. Built to last decades.

UMH devices are designed and manufactured in Austria — the home of European precision engineering for water optimization. Each device is built from lead-free brass that's 24-karat gold-plated, and every internal vial is handcrafted from borosilicate glass and filled with high-energy spring water before being sealed.

The standard certifying body is TÜV EU — the German technical inspection authority that audits manufacturing tolerances, material safety, and product compliance across European industries. TÜV certification covers material composition, structural integrity, and water-contact safety. UMH devices are not NSF-certified — NSF/ANSI standards cover filtration performance, and UMH devices are not filtration devices.

The 5-year warranty covers manufacturing defects. The devices are built for lifetime durability — there are no consumable parts, no electronics to fail, and no moving components to wear out.

01

Filter

RO under-sink for drinking water, or whole-home filtration for the house. Water enters clean and contaminant-free.

02

Remineralize

If filtered water is demineralized (RO output is), remineralize with Sango Coral or similar.

03

Structure

Water passes through the UMH device — Pure for under-sink, Master for whole-home, Alpha or Delta for tabletop pour-through.

04

Drink

Structured water reaches your glass — or, with UMH Master, every tap in the home.

Inline UMH devices (Pure and Master) are installed by a licensed plumber and connect with standard push-fit fittings. Whole-home installs (Master) require coordination with your existing filtration system. Tabletop devices (Alpha, Delta) require no plumbing — pour water through and collect from below. Boris Jabotinsky, our Licensed Master Plumber (CSLB #1102129), specifies the right inline configuration during your consultation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Structured water, answered honestly.

What is structured water, exactly?

Structured water — also called EZ water or exclusion zone water — describes water with a specific molecular arrangement that researchers like Dr. Gerald Pollack at the University of Washington have called a fourth phase of water, distinct from solid, liquid, and vapor. It forms organized cluster patterns with a slight negative charge near hydrophilic surfaces. The same molecular organization occurs naturally in springs, glacial melt, and the water inside fresh produce. Research is emerging — the physics of vortex action on water molecules is well-established; the broader physiological claims sit in a contested research space.

Is structured water scientifically proven?

The honest answer: the physics of vortex action reorganizing water's hydrogen-bond network is demonstrable and accepted. The broader claim that structured water meaningfully changes cellular absorption is emerging research — peer-reviewed papers have been published (most notably by Dr. Gerald Pollack), but mainstream consensus has not yet formed. Wellness practitioners, longevity clinics, and performance-focused families integrate UMH devices into their water routines. We position the devices honestly: the underlying mechanism is real; the health effects sit in a research space that's still being mapped.

How does a UMH device structure water?

Water passes through a gold-plated brass chamber containing handcrafted borosilicate glass vials filled with high-energy spring water. The chamber geometry creates a controlled vortex — the same molecular-organization dynamic found in natural rivers and waterfalls. The vials transfer structural information to the passing water without direct contact. The device adds nothing to the water and removes nothing. It only reorganizes the existing molecular arrangement.

What's the difference between UMH Pure, Alpha, Delta, and Master?

The UMH Pure ($997) is an inline under-sink device installed after your reverse osmosis system — the canonical third stage of the Hydration Stack. The UMH Alpha ($1,499) is a compact tabletop freestanding device that converts to portable with the UMH Travel Kit. The UMH Delta ($2,999) is the flagship freestanding pyramid with 16 vials, 10 gemstones, EM ceramics, and the only UMH device built to handle UV-treated water. The UMH Master (from $3,000) installs at the main water line and delivers structured water to every tap in the home.

Does structured water taste different?

Yes, and this is the most consistent customer-reported difference. People describe structured water as softer, rounder, and easier to drink — even when the source water is identical. Taste is the universally reported effect across our customer base and the most repeatable feedback point.

Can I use a UMH device with my reverse osmosis system?

Yes — and this is what the UMH Pure is designed for. The Pure installs after your RO system and before your faucet, regardless of RO brand. It works with the GoodFor MicroMax 8500, MicroMax 7000, Hydration Stack, and any other under-sink RO. The correct sequence is filter (RO) → remineralize (Sango Coral or similar) → structure (UMH Pure).

Is structured water the same as alkaline water?

No — these are different concepts. Alkaline water refers to water with a pH above 7, usually achieved by adding minerals (like the Sango Coral) or by ionizing. Structured water refers to the molecular arrangement of the H₂O molecules, independent of pH. You can have alkaline water that isn't structured, and structured water that isn't alkaline. The Hydration Stack combines both: Sango Coral handles the mineral/pH layer; UMH Pure handles the structuring layer.

Do UMH devices need electricity or maintenance?

The inline devices (UMH Pure and UMH Master) require zero electricity and zero maintenance — no filters to change, no consumables, no power. The tabletop devices (UMH Alpha and UMH Delta) also use no electricity, but they need a baking-soda clean 1–2 times per year. None of the devices require a drain connection.

What are UMH devices made of?

The housing is 24-karat gold-plated lead-free brass. The internal vials are handcrafted from borosilicate glass and filled with high-energy spring water. The UMH Delta also contains 10 specifically selected gemstones and crystals (quartz, rose quartz, shungite, tiger eye, and others) and EM ceramics. There are no plastics in the water-contact path.

Is structured water safe to drink?

Yes. UMH devices do not add anything to the water and do not remove anything. They only reorganize the molecular arrangement of water that has already been filtered and (ideally) remineralized. The brass housing is lead-free and gold-plated; the vials are sealed borosilicate glass; the device has been TÜV EU certified for material safety.

How long does a UMH device last?

UMH devices are built for lifetime durability — there are no consumable parts, no electronics, and no moving components to wear out. The manufacturer warranty period is 5 years and covers manufacturing defects. We don't use the phrase "lifetime warranty" because the official warranty period is 5 years, but the devices themselves are designed to last decades.

Can I structure other liquids like juice or tea?

Clear alcoholic beverages — wine, whiskey, vodka, tequila — are fine to structure. Always rinse the device with clear water immediately after. Never structure juices, milks, carbonated drinks, tea, coffee, or any liquid with sediment — these will damage the device or contaminate the vial chambers.

These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. UMH structuring devices are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease. Research on structured water is emerging; we position these devices honestly within that evidence landscape.
