Water optimization: how it works.
Water optimization is the practice of adding back what filtration takes out and conditioning water before it is consumed: remineralization after reverse osmosis, molecular hydrogen, and structuring. Filtration comes first. This page covers what each of the three layers does, what the published research supports for it, and where it installs, at the kitchen tap and at the point of entry.

Before optimization
Nothing on this page replaces filtration.
Filtration reduces what should not be in the water, and it is the only stage certified to a contaminant standard. At the point of entry, Clearess® media certified for 2,000,000 gallons handles chlorine and chloramine for every tap in the house. At the kitchen sink, reverse osmosis certified to NSF/ANSI 58 reduces lead, fluoride, arsenic, and dissolved solids, and the MicroMax 8500 adds NSF/ANSI 53 certification for PFOA and PFOS.
Optimization is what happens after that. A reverse osmosis membrane rejects dissolved solids by size, and calcium and magnesium are dissolved solids, so they leave with the contaminants: the MicroMax 8500 reduces total dissolved solids by 93.8% in NSF/ANSI 58 testing. Remineralization puts them back. Hydrogen and structuring are additions rather than corrections; neither one filters anything, and no GoodFor page positions either as filtration.
If your water is not filtered yet, start with the whole house water filter guide or the reverse osmosis systems, and read this page after.
The three layers
What goes back in, and what is added.
Each layer does one thing, and they are independent: a home can run one, two, or all three. The order only matters at the kitchen sink, where minerals go back in before the water is structured.

Layer one
Remineralization
Restores what reverse osmosis takes out
An in-line cartridge of fossilized Okinawan Sango coral dissolves calcium, magnesium, and 70+ trace minerals back into the water as it leaves the RO tank, in the 2:1 calcium-to-magnesium ratio the coral carries, and raises pH through mineral content alone, with no synthetic alkalizing agents.
The case for it rests on measurement, not on a health claim: certified testing shows how much the membrane takes out, and the cartridge puts a known mineral profile back.
Cartridge life: about 24 months
Power: none, passive in-line
Position: after any under-sink reverse osmosis, on 1/4-inch tubing

Layer two
Molecular hydrogen
Added, not restored
Molecular hydrogen (H2) is dissolved into water by PEM electrolysis, which splits water into hydrogen and oxygen and holds the hydrogen in solution at a measurable concentration. It is taken by bottle, by inhalation, or by bath immersion; nothing is installed in a pipe.
This is the layer with the largest human literature: over 2,000 peer-reviewed studies, beginning with Ohsawa et al., Nature Medicine, 2007, and a 2024 systematic review of 25 clinical trials. Concentration is the variable that matters, so GoodFor states it as a tested number.
Concentration: up to 4,220 PPB at 20 minutes, third-party tested by H2 Analytics (Lumati Bottle V2)
Formats: bottle, inhalation, bath
Installation: none

Layer three
Structuring
Conditions the flow, filters nothing
A structuring device passes water through a controlled vortex, under the sink before the faucet or on the main at the point of entry. It has no moving parts, no electricity, and no consumables, and it changes nothing in the water's chemistry: it does not filter, soften, or reduce any contaminant.
This is the least established of the three layers. Research suggests structured water may be absorbed more efficiently at the cellular level and may support deeper hydration; the human evidence is still developing, and GoodFor makes no direct health claim for it. What is certified is the device.
Under the sink: UMH Pure, last before the faucet
Whole home: UMH Master on the main, after filtration
Certified: TÜV EU · 5-year warranty
Where it installs
At the kitchen tap, and at the point of entry.
Drinking water and the rest of the house are treated separately. This is what each layer looks like in each place, and the order it goes in.
| Layer | Kitchen tap (drinking water) | Whole home | Order |
|---|---|---|---|
| Filtration | Reverse osmosis under the sink. The MicroMax 8500 is certified to NSF/ANSI 42, 53, 58, 401, and 372. | Clearess® whole-home filtration on the main, with softening where the water is hard. | Always first |
| Remineralization | Sango Coral cartridge in-line after the RO tank. | Not needed. Whole-home filtration does not strip minerals. A softener exchanges calcium and magnesium for sodium at every tap, which is why softened homes run reverse osmosis plus remineralization at the kitchen sink. | After reverse osmosis |
| Hydrogen | Lumati bottle, filled from the tap. | Inhalation generator or bath immersion. Not plumbed. | Any time |
| Structuring | UMH Pure, last in line before the dedicated faucet. | UMH Master on the main after filtration, sized to the filtration system's connection (1 inch or 1.5 inch). | Always last |
Under one kitchen sink, the three drinking-water stages are sold as one system: the Hydration Stack. If you already own reverse osmosis from any brand, the second and third stages install in-line on it; they are the remineralization and structuring filters in the water optimization collection.
The evidence
What the research supports, layer by layer.
Every study a GoodFor page cites is named by author, journal, and year, with the sample size when it is available, and animal data is never used to make a claim about people. On that standard the three layers are not equal.
Strongest evidence
Molecular hydrogen
Ohsawa et al., Nature Medicine, 2007, established the mechanism: molecular hydrogen acts as a selective antioxidant. A 2024 systematic review of 25 clinical trials reported antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects across the trials it included. Many of those trials are small and dose varies between them, which is why GoodFor states concentration as a tested figure and not as a benefit.
Measured, not claimed
Remineralization
NSF/ANSI 58 testing shows the MicroMax 8500 reducing total dissolved solids by 93.8%, and calcium and magnesium are part of that figure. The Sango Coral cartridge restores a known mineral profile from a known source. GoodFor does not claim a health outcome from drinking remineralized water; it claims that the minerals reverse osmosis takes out are put back, which can be measured at the faucet.
Still developing
Structuring
Structured water, also called exclusion zone or EZ water, is described in the literature as an organized molecular arrangement similar to water in springs and fresh produce. Research suggests it may be absorbed more efficiently at the cellular level and may support deeper hydration. The human trial base is thin, and GoodFor makes no direct health claim for structuring. The device is what carries a certification: TÜV EU, with a 5-year warranty. What is available, under the sink and whole home, is on structured water devices.
None of this is medical advice. Whether any water is appropriate for a medical condition, a medication, an infant, or a pregnancy is a question for your physician.

Free consultation
See what your water needs before you add anything.
A free consultation goes through your utility's published report and your home. If your water needs filtration first, the written proposal says that. If you already own reverse osmosis, it lists the two in-line stages and nothing else.
